About

๐Ÿ‘‹๐Ÿผ Hi, Iโ€™m Hannah.

Iโ€™m a scientist by background; alongside my own research I focus on the communication of research and data to broader audiences. There is often a large gap between academic research and public understanding โ€“ I try to bridge that. I’m passionate about:

๐Ÿ“ˆ ๐Ÿ”ข Data visualisation

๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿ”ฌ Scientific research

โœ๏ธ ๐ŸŽ™ Science writing and communication

Most of my work, research and writing is now published at Our World in Data โ€“ there you will find my latest work (often daily) across a wide range of aspects of global development.

I occasionally post on this personal blog: you will find these articles (and some old ones) here.

๐Ÿฆ You can follow me on Twitter here: @_HannahRitchie

I hold a Bachelorโ€™s (Environmental Geoscience); Masterโ€™s (Carbon Management) and PhD from the University of Edinburgh. My primary research is in the area of environmental sustainability: climate change, energy systems, and food and agriculture.

But environmental problems never arise in isolation, and in fact, trying to understand or tackle them in isolation often leads to poor solutions. So the range of topics I cover is now much broader: I work at the intersection of environmental sustainability and human wellbeing.

I am currently a researcher Oxford Martin Programme in Global Development, at the University of Oxford. Iโ€™m Head of Research at Our World in Data โ€“ an online web publication focused on research and data to understand and make progress against the worldโ€™s largest problems.
